ABOUT GRAND HARBOUR MARINA
Grand Harbour Marina is a premier waterfront destination located in Lagoon City, Brechin, Ontario — on the beautiful east shore of Lake Simcoe. Under new ownership and management, we are transforming this iconic marina into a destination defined by elevated service, world-class amenities, and a commitment to excellence across every department.
Our Marine Service Shop is the technical heartbeat of the marina — the place where our members and guests trust us with their most valued investments. We are building a marine service team grounded in technical skill, professional pride, and a genuine commitment to getting it right. If you are an apprentice marine mechanic who is serious about your trade and wants to grow your career in a supportive, well-equipped Ship Yard environment — we want to hear from you.
THE ROLE
As Marine Mechanic Apprentice at Grand Harbour Marina, you will work alongside our Chief Marine Engineer in the Marine Service Shop, developing your skills across the full scope of marine engine service, diagnostics, and repair on a diverse fleet of inboard, outboard, and stern drive engines. You will assist with routine service and maintenance, progress to more complex diagnostics and repair work as your skills develop, and receive active support for OEM certification training with Mercury, Volvo Penta, and Yamaha.
This is a full-time position with a benefits package, a structured path for skill development and certification, and the opportunity to grow into a fully qualified marine technician as the marina’s service department expands. Mercury Marine and Volvo Penta certification are strong assets for the full-time role. Yamaha certification is also highly valued and is particularly relevant during the seasonal peak period. We are looking for someone who is eager to learn, takes their trade seriously, and brings the right attitude to the Marine Service Shop every single day.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Engine Service & Routine Maintenance
• Assist Chief Marine Engineer with scheduled service and preventative maintenance on inboard, outboard, and stern drive marine engines including oil and filter changes, impeller replacement, gear oil service, fuel filter replacement, spark plug service, and belt and hose inspection
• Perform pre-season commissioning and post-season winterization of engines and marine mechanical systems under the supervision and direction of senior technicians
• Assist with the flushing, fogging, and protective treatment of engine systems during lay-up and recommissioning procedures
• Inspect, lubricate, and service steering systems, throttle and shift cables, trim tabs, power tilt and trim systems, and related mechanical components
• Assist with propeller removal, inspection, installation, and basic propeller damage assessment
• Maintain accurate and complete service records, work orders, and parts used documentation for every job on the Shop Management System
Diagnostics & Repair Assistance
• Assist senior technicians with engine diagnostics using OEM diagnostic software and tools including Mercury’s CDS/VesselView Mobile, Volvo Penta VODIA, Yamaha Diagnostic System (YDS), and equivalent dealer-level diagnostic platforms
• Learn to interpret fault codes, live data readings, and diagnostic test results under the guidance of senior technicians, building diagnostic competency progressively over time
• Assist with the removal, repair, and reinstallation of engine components including fuel systems, cooling systems, electrical systems, ignition systems, and lower unit assemblies as directed
• Assist with the diagnosis and repair of marine electrical systems including battery systems, charging circuits, bilge pump systems, navigation lighting, and onboard 12V and 24V DC systems
• Support senior technicians on warranty repair work, ensuring all OEM documentation, claim requirements, and parts return procedures are followed precisely
• Assist with stern drive service including outdrive removal, bellows inspection and replacement, gimbal bearing inspection, and reinstallation and alignment procedures
Marine Service Shop Support & Workshop Operations
• Maintain the Marine Service Shop, service bays, and tool storage areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition throughout every shift
• Assist with vessel haul-out and launch support, vessel movement with Travellift to/from ShipYard as needed, blocking and support of vessels on stands as directed by senior technicians
• Receive, inspect, and organize parts and materials deliveries — verifying quantities and part numbers against work orders and maintaining accurate parts inventory
• Operate Marine Service Shop equipment including forklifts, travel lifts, and yard vehicles only under supervision and after proper site-specific training has been completed and documented
• Assist other Marine Service Shop trades and technicians with tasks as directed by the Harbour Master or Operations Manager, supporting a collaborative and efficient yard operation
• Complete daily shift logs, job records, and time tracking accurately and submit to management at the end of each shift
• All vessels MUST be water tested to ensure work is completed satisfactorily before closing work orders and returning vessels to customers
Professional Development & Certification
• Actively engage in all OEM training programs, online modules, and in-dealership certification courses supported by the marina — including Mercury Marine, Volvo Penta, and Yamaha dealer certification pathways
• Maintain an up-to-date personal training record and certification log, sharing progress with Chief Marine Engineer on a regular basis as well as the Harbour Master as required.
• Apply knowledge gained through training directly in the Marine Service Shop under Chief Marine Engineer supervision, building confidence and competency progressively
• Demonstrate a genuine commitment to continuous learning, professional growth, and raising the technical standard of the Grand Harbour Marina service department
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
Required
• Currently enrolled in or a recent graduate of a recognized marine engine technology, small engine technician, or related mechanical trades apprenticeship or diploma program

• Basic hands-on mechanical aptitude and familiarity with common hand and power tools in a service or shop environment
• Ability to follow technical instructions, service documentation, and OEM procedures accurately and carefully
• Strong work ethic, reliable, punctual, and willing to take direction from senior technicians with a positive and receptive attitude
• Ability to work both independently on assigned tasks and collaboratively within the Marine Service Shop team
• Physically capable of sustained manual work in a Marine Mechanical Service Shop environment including lifting up to 50 lbs, working in confined engine spaces, and standing for extended periods
• Valid Ontario driver’s licence with a clean driving record
• Must possess a valid PCOC certification.
Strong Assets — OEM Certification
• Mercury Marine dealer certification (any level) — a strong asset for this full-time role and will be given priority consideration in the selection process
• Volvo Penta dealer certification (any level) — a strong asset for this full-time role and will be given priority consideration in the selection process
• Yamaha Marine dealer certification (any level) — a strong asset particularly relevant during the seasonal peak service period
• Candidates holding one or more of the above OEM certifications will be considered for an accelerated development track within the Grand Harbour service department
Also Preferred
• Diesel engine experience — marine diesel, inboard diesel, or diesel generator service — a strong asset given the range of vessels serviced in the Marine Service Shop
• Previous hands-on experience in a marine service shop, boatyard, or powerboat dealership environment — even informal or co-op experience is valued
• Familiarity with marine diagnostic software platforms including CDS/VesselView, VODIA, or YDS
• Basic knowledge of marine electrical systems, 12V DC circuits, and battery and charging systems
• WHMIS certification or willingness to obtain prior to commencing Marine Service Shop duties
• Basic computer literacy for accessing OEM technical portals, service documentation, and shop management software
